Gossip Girl: Everybody Hates Aaron
It seems no one likes Serena van der Woodsen’s new flame on Gossip Girl. Apparently, Aaron Rose is based on a real NYC artist of the same name. And that artist is pissed.
According to the New York Post, authentic Aaron (now 39), is an actual artist who opened the Alleged Gallery on Ludlow Street in 1992. The gallery showed early work by artists like Mike Mills, Shepard Fairey and Spike Jonze.
So is it the uninspired, conspicuously vanilla art that’s got him down? Fake Aaron’s floppy, unwashed locks or casual-yet-irritating arrogance? Perhaps it’s the troublesome semi-grown ‘stache? Mostly, the real Aaron just wishes “they would have made him cooler.”
The writer of the Gossip Girl books, Cecily von Ziegesar, is also none-too-pleased about the portrayal of Aaron on the show. She says: “He’s so slimy! He’s just … ick.” In the written series, Ziegesar tells nymag.com, Rose was not even an artist. She describes him as a “happy suburban hippie” who “smokes herbal cigarettes and eats vegan and has cute mini-dreadlocks.” Honestly, that description doesn’t sound like much of an improvement. It would seem the character was doomed to be a pretentious windbag with unfortunate hair from the start.
